Derbyshire and McKiernan agree one year extension

All-rounder, Mattie McKiernan, has signed a one-year contract extension with Derbyshire, keeping him at The Incora County Ground until the end of the 2023 season.

The leg spinner, 28, took an impressive 17 wickets for the Falcons in the 2022 Vitality Blast, as Derbyshire finished third in the North Group and reached the knockout stages, while he also scored a maiden first-class century against Leicestershire in April.

McKiernan also played a key role in Derbyshire’s win over Worcestershire in the LV= County Championship last month, scoring 71 in a 140-run seventh wicket stand with Anuj Dal, and has accumulated 142 runs at an average of 71 in three Royal London Cup matches to date.

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “Mattie has shown real development this season, and he’s performed well whenever we’ve called on him in first-class cricket, while his wickets tally in the
Vitality Blast was crucial to our progression.
“The key now is for Mattie to find that consistency across the formats, something we’re starting to
witness as we head into the One-Day Cup, because his natural ability with bat and ball is clear for
all to see.”

McKiernan added: “This has been my best season with Derbyshire to date and I feel the clarity I’ve been given has helped with that.
“Mickey’s project for Derbyshire is ambitious and it’s amazing to be a part of, so for me I just want
to keep progressing and continue to contribute to the Club”
