Somerset reward Kerr with new contract

Somerset CCC Head Coach, Jason Kerr has been rewarded with a contract extension, which will see him remain at the helm for a further two years.

Jason has put pen to paper on a deal that will see him remain at the Cooper Associates County Ground until at least the end of the 2024 season.

Jason first appeared for the County as a player in 1992, with the highlight of his playing career coming in 1999 when he claimed seven for 23 against Leicestershire. A shoulder injury brought his career to a premature end in 2002, but the former all rounder returned to Somerset to lead the Academy & Second XI in 2005 and was appointed bowling coach in 2015.

With such great depth, experience and insight into the Club, and a track record of developing players, Jason was appointed as Head Coach ahead of the 2018 season, leading the Club to Royal London One-Day Cup glory in 2019.

His outstanding work has also been recognised in recent years by the ECB, who invited him to undertake a key coaching position with the England Lions in Australia in 2020.

After signing his contract extension, Jason said: “I’m incredibly grateful and delighted that I can continue my journey with Somerset CCC. Every day I have the opportunity to shape the future of this great Club, influencing the individuals to achieve their goals and represent the Club in the Somerset way. We continually strive to push boundaries and punch beyond our weight.”

Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry added: “Jason is one of the top coaches in the country and we are really delighted that he has extended his time with the Club. Since his appointment as Head Coach, we have seen him lead Somerset forward both on and off the field to be an incredibly competitive side who develop from within.
“He lives and breathes Somerset cricket, and his passion and dedication are infectious. He is always looking to challenge and develop what we do, and how we develop the environment and the performances on the field to keep us at the top table of the game. He has instilled a winning mentality within the dressing room which has seen us win silverware in 2019 as well as finishing as runners up in the Vitality Blast & LV= Insurance County Championship on numerous occasions.
“His passion for developing players, coaches and support staff has supported the growth and progress of a significant number of players and staff, which has resulted in opportunities for them within the England framework.
“He is highly respected within the game and his new contract is just reward for everything that he has achieved during his time in the role. This also reflects his and the Clubs ambition moving forward.”
