Clan extinguish Blaze
Two early third period goals proved clinical as Glasgow Clan, sponsored by Aspray Glasgow West, bounced back with a 5-2 victory at Coventry Blaze.
Clan went to the Skydome looking for a reaction after the 4-1 loss on Friday at the hands of Nottingham Panthers and did so in impressive fashion with another good spread of goals.
There wasn’t much to choose between the teams in the first, but Blaze did threaten at one point when Joey Raats found space just inside the Clan defensive zone, unleashing a deadly shot. Shane Starrett had it covered.
Matt Haywood got the opener late on in the first period when Quinn O'Brien’s effort saw Blaze goalie CJ Motte attempt to poke it away, only for Clan’s #11 to be in place to force it over the line for the lead.
A couple of minutes later, Coventry were level as Janne Lakkonen, at the boards, found Ryan Penny in the centre who then smashed it past Starrett.
Cody Sol picked up a second for Glasgow in the middle period to restore the lead, as he blasted one from the blue line after picking up a pass from Colton Yellow Horn.
Blaze went close not long after when Luke Ferrara struck the post with an effort, but just as Clan killed a penalty, Harry Ferguson broke loose and delivered an excellent finish past Motte short side to increase the lead to 3-1.
Coventry’s netminder denied Clan a fourth with a wonder save, but Danny Stewart’s men then took advantage on a powerplay as Ferrara sent a one-timer screaming into the Clan net.
The visitors got the perfect start to the third period as Brock Beukeboom, surged forward, passing two defenceman and slotted his finish past Motte.
They added to the tally further when Gauthier finished off a rebound to make it 5-2 immediately after to open up a three-goal cushion.
Clan hadn’t got over the line yet and two huge saves from Starrett made sure Coventry weren’t going to threaten that lead and so it stayed with Glasgow returning home with two points.
