Flames fall 2-1 to Flyers

Guildford Flames ice hockey club had an early lead, but a pair of unanswered Fife Flyers goals in the 2nd period set the visitors to a 2-1 win on Spectrum ice.

The only goal through the starting 20 minutes was shorthanded when Kruise Reddick stole it at the blueline then put a bit of air under a short 2 on 1 pass to Ian Watters who put it away for a lead that would hold into the middle set.

In the 25th minute, Chase Schaber pulled flyers level then late in the frame, not long after a missed Flames penalty shot opportunity, Schaber put the visitors in front with a powerplay goal that helped them to the only lead they would need.

In the 3rd, Spectrum’s men commanded the territorial advantage and generated some high quality opportunities, including a couple of clear cut breakaways, but couldn’t get one across the line, and the evening timed out on a 1 goal defeat.

“In the big picture,” offered Paul Dixon, “that was a game we will look back on as one we should have won.”

“We were very good in the 1st and 3rd periods, but we just couldn’t put anything away. We should have been up 2 or 3 goals after 20 minutes, which would have made a difference, but credit to Fife who took their opportunities and forced us into catch up mode for much of the last half of the game.”

“We didn’t play as well in the 2nd as well as we might have liked, and obviously they did their damage across that stretch, but we came out in the 3rd and did absolutely everything we could have done except score. With some of the chances we had it is difficult to even work out how we didn’t at least get 1.”

“We are all frustrated by how that turned out, but we can’t change it now. We have to look ahead to Thursday at Coventry and see if we can find a bit more luck around the net.”
