Flames secure Playoff place with OT win

Brett Ferguson scored less than a minute into overtime to secure a Flames 2-1 road win over Cardiff Devils, and the result secures a playoff place for Spectrum’s men.

Levi Cable opened the Flames account just over 4 minutes in and a pair of Flames powerplays that followed were great chances to extend, but they were unable to convert, and the single goal difference remained on the board as the period closed.

Early in the 2nd, Devils made use of their own powerplay when Matt Register levelled the score 66 seconds after re-start, but that too was the only goal of the frame and the teams began, and indeed ended, the 3rd on a goal each.

56 seconds into the 3 on 3 tiebreaking period, Ferguson delivered the winner when he got the better of Devils netminder Mac Carruth.

“Tonight was quite a back and forth game,” explained Paul Dixon, “with both teams getting lots of shots and both netminders keeping the score very low. We had the puck for a lot of that initial minute of overtime, and it was great to see Brett get loose there and complete the play to send us out of there with a result.”

“That was a big pair of points that helps keep us in the race for a little higher table placement, but more importantly guarantees us a playoff place.”

“We are trying to finish as high up the table as we can, and it is a crowded place around 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th so every single point we get matters right now. This really helps us keep the pressure on those other teams and now we have to try and repeat it in Nottingham tomorrow.”
