Steve Lee returns to the Flames

Great Britain Defenceman Steve Lee is joining the Flames after signing a 2-year deal with the club. Lee, now 28, played under Spectrum lights in 2008-2009 when he iced 50 English Premier League games and recorded 11 goals and 21 points. He spent the following decade at Nottingham Panthers and last season had a goal and 11 assists in 67 appearances.

“I am very excited to be returning to Guildford,” said Lee. “It’s a great organisation to be part of, with a great fan-base. I had an amazing time there 10 years ago. I have nothing but great memories from my first stint with the club and hope to make many more.”

Including an early EIHL start with his hometown Hull Stingrays when he played at the top level in 2006-2007, The 6’0”, 200lbs blueliner is just shy of 700 games played while posting 29 goals and 181 points along the way.

A track record for EIHL success includes 6 Cup championships between 2009 and 2016; a league title in 12-13; and 4 playoff captures. The big year was 2012-2013 when Panthers monopolised the silver set by collecting the league, cup and playoffs. Lee’s most recent trophy grab was 2016-2017 when Panthers put their name on the Continental Cup European competition.

“The Flames had a great season last year,” Lee added, “and it’s a great sign to see a large portion of that team already signed up. Hopefully I can help the team add to the success they earned last season. I can’t wait to meet the guys and get started.”

Internationally, Lee’s GB representation was highlighted this past Spring when he was selected as a top 3 player on his team when they played in the World’s Elite pool and defeated France to remain in the upper deck for the next World event. In all, he has 49 caps with the senior side at World championship and Olympic qualificationa to go with more than 30 caps at Under 18 and 20 levels.

“It is a pretty big signing for us to be able to get a GB player of his level into our lineup,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon.

“He has obviously come a long way from when he was just getting started here as an 18-year-old, and he has become a very solid defensive guy back there which he demonstrated while playing against the world’s very best players this past Spring.”

“We know that he was really excited about possibly returning here and we are thrilled to not only get a player of his quality, but also a character guy with personality and leadership attributes that are great additions to our lineup.”
